Sweeper Pre-Trip Checklist: Crosswind and Crosswind1
One of the quickest things an operator can do to increase the longevity of their machine is to perform a pre-trip inspection before every job. In doing so, they can prevent buildup of dirt or leaves in the machine that could compromise the function of components over time. We have created this guide using Elgin’s manual and provided insight on each step to give you even more confidence that everything is as it should be as you run through the list.
Check backup alarm for operation. Make sure it is functioning correctly.
Check VPD or auxiliary engine fluid level. The fluid level sight glass is located curbside inside the wheel well. Operational level is at least 4.5-7 gallons.
Clean/wash down the entire sweeper. Cleaning prevents buildup, as packed material in the frame can cause corrosion and failure of components, as well as a flame source. Clean radiators to keep them from overheating. Clean and grease all bearings.
Check hydraulic oil level with the hopper down and the chassis engine at idle. Inspect engine levels before starting in order to get true level. Low levels can cause overheating and damage to hydraulic and engine components.
Inspect spray water nozzles. Nozzles should be removed and cleaned if clogs are found during the pre-trip inspection. These are used as dust control and to help separate the material from the air stream. If not checked, the nozzle could clog and will either drip, or not spray.
Check pickup head pressure slot. Adjust as needed. Inspect for damage. Should be ¼’’ to ⅜’’ wide. If you will be using the machine to pick up river rock, leave at ¼ to ⅛ on one side, and ½ to ⅝ on curbside of the machine.
Check hopper door seal. Inspect for damage. Clean the door seal every time you dump. At 500 hours, clean and put grease on the seal. Close, reopen and inspect the grease pattern. The pattern should be greater than ½’’ or else air will leak.
Check impeller seal. Make sure it is clean, and at 500 hours apply a light coating of grease. Impeller tube, suction seal and rear door should all have greater than ½’’ of grease applied in order to prevent leaking.
Check broom patterns. Brooms should be positioned to feed into the pickup head. Left gutter broom should be in the 9 o’clock/1 o’clock position, and the right gutter broom should be in the 3 o’clock/ 11 o’clock position. Brooms should be 5 degrees forward and 5 degrees out.
Inspect spray water level. Consider your route and plan accordingly.
Check centerboard for position. Make sure it isn’t too high or dragging on the ground.
Check vacuum enhancer. Check to make sure it is functional.
